Old-school values, cutting-edge technology.

Young & PrattIn West Texas in 1922, partners J.D. Young, a sheet metal worker, and Frank M. Pratt, a plumber and pipefitter, teamed up to provide reliable HVAC services.

When the growth of The University of Texas spurred a building boom in 1929 – while the rest of the nation was struggling through the Depression – Young & Pratt made the move to Austin. Here, we grew our business to include steam boiler installation, piping, plumbing, and sheet metal fabrication to buildings at The University and around Austin.

In 1967, when Young retired, engineer Joseph C. Zern became co-owner and continued Young & Pratt’s tradition of growth and excellence. Joe retired nearly 50 years later, having instilled these values in his son David, now Owner and President. “There’s no secret to our longevity,” David says. “We still live by J.D. Young’s and my father’s philosophy of standing behind our work. We’ve been around a long time and plan to stay around a lot longer.”

Today, as one of Central Texas’ most established mechanical contractors, Young & Pratt takes “established” to a whole new level. Most of the team of more than 85 trained professionals have worked here for the majority of their careers, with a combined experience in excess of 825 years.
“We provide continuity of manpower and experience,” says David. “When a customer comes back to us, he knows that the employees who originally built the project are probably still here.”

Young & Pratt installs and services plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. We perform specialized services for technology companies, including extensive work on LEED projects. In addition, we custom-fabricate metal for all types of industries and uses.
